Shaun studied Computer Science and Software Engineering at Swinburne University of Technology. After graduating, he chose to leave the city behind and return to his hometown in regional Victoria.
Noticing the limited opportunities for software development in the area, Shaun took the initiative to start his own business. Beginning with basic website projects, he quickly earned a reputation for delivering reliable software solutions, anticipating client needs, and designing intuitive, user-friendly interfaces.
Working independently and with small teams allowed Shaun to complete projects more efficiently and cost-effectively compared to larger development firms.
With 20 years of experience, Shaun has built a broad skill set across a wide range of industries, developing solutions such as:
Throughout his career, many Australian businesses have sought Shaun’s expertise to create custom software that streamlines operations and reduces administrative workload. This journey naturally led to a partnership with Loz, combining their talents to deliver a complete, tailored software solution.
Loz has been involved in the mining, manufacturing, and construction industries since 2007. She began her career as an administrator at a large manufacturing company before relocating to regional Victoria to pursue a career in construction.
After a few years, Lauren decided to hit the road in her ute, traveling around Australia. This journey led her to a senior role in the mining industry, where she gained extensive experience in operations for a large civil construction company and was exposed to various departments within a large organization. Five years later, Lauren returned to her hometown of Wodonga, where she joined a corporate manufacturer as a manufacturing assistant.
Her dedication quickly earned her a promotion to Assistant Operations Manager. During this time, she gained expertise in lean management, value stream mapping, and risk management, developing valuable skills that improved efficiency and performance.
Lauren then applied her knowledge to the construction industry, helping a local business improve its practices and implement an integrated management system for ISO Accreditation.
Today, Lauren manages multiple businesses, specializing in risk management, business performance management, auditing, and HSEQ consulting.
Over the past few years, and after a few beers, Shaun and Lauren often discussed the challenges of running a business with multiple applications that didn’t integrate well, leading to over 20 hours of administrative work each week—just to keep everything running. It was crazy! One day, a friend approached them, asking if they could help digitize their business to meet ISO standards, as their main client was requiring all subcontractors to be certified. In February 2022, they decided to launch Business Support Partners (BSP) to help local businesses in the Albury Wodonga community. This is the story of their journey.
Leveraging Lauren’s business analytical skills for process mapping and Shaun’s expertise in digital platforms, they built a simple app that centralized all business operations, including the ability to integrate with the company’s finance system. This allowed team members to complete timesheets linked to specific jobs, which supervisors could then approve for payroll processing. The payroll team could export hours directly into their payroll system—no need for manual entry or chasing employees for pay runs. This also gave the business owner visibility into actual hours worked on each job, making it easier to compare with original quotes.
Next, they developed a module for plant and equipment management. Several friends in the earthmoving industry needed to keep track of machinery, including pre-start checks, servicing, repairs, risk assessments, and verification of competencies (VOCs) for each machine. This information was essential for clients but took supervisors hours to gather and send. BSP digitized the process, adding insurance details, reminders for renewals, registration details, and payment reminders to maintain plant compliance. They expanded this module to track other business assets such as ladders, power tools, and anything else requiring maintenance, linking it to each project.
As clients began requesting licenses and certifications for all workers, BSP created user profiles that linked roles to certifications and populated a skills matrix. Workers could upload their certificates, and an admin could easily verify them. This ensured all employees were compliant with their roles. To make it even more efficient, they created an employee register that could export all user details and qualifications into a simple PDF for clients to review. A hyperlink in the PDF allowed clients to view certificates directly, eliminating the need for multiple email attachments.
When it came to project management, Shaun and Lauren understood that construction sites required vast amounts of documentation, often stored in massive folders just in case a client needed them. However, as things changed on-site, keeping the documents up-to-date was a challenge and posed a risk of non-compliance. Daily toolbox talks, safe work method statements (SWMS), site management plans, drawings, and other documents piled up. To solve this, they developed a job management module that centralized all project documents in one location. This included job summaries, key client contacts, scope of work, images, GPS locations, site inductions, personnel lists, plant and equipment lists, hazardous substance registers, waste records, contractor management, man hours, and health and safety events.
Looking ahead, they turned their attention to ISO certification for 45001 (Safety), 14001 (Environmental), and 9001 (Quality) Standards. With Lauren’s auditing experience, she knew exactly what was required to pass an audit and achieve accreditation. Using her workbook tool, she compiled a list of all policies, procedures, forms, and templates needed for auditing. Shaun then created a checklist builder for generating digital forms and developed an audit schedule module with reminders for form completion. Other modules developed during this process included a Document Register, Risk Register, Contractor Management Portal, Supplier Management, Hazard Register, Incident Reports, and Corrective Action Registers.
Three years later, they have built a comprehensive operations management system and an ISO-compliant platform, all in one application.
